“The hands are part of our personality - who we are. “A hand injury can be devastating to our ability to function in virtually every area of life - work, play, communication, maintaining our appearance, everyday activities like driving, or feeding and dressing ourselves,” says Dr. She is the former features editor for the Daily Republic.Nikki Roman's thumbs are essential to her work as an aestheticianThe eyes may be the window to the soul, according to “The Bard,” William Shakespeare, but Board Certified Orthopedic and Hand Surgeon Stephen O’Connell, MD, says it’s the hands that are essential to what we do and who we are. I can’t gesticulate nearly as a well as Bruno Tonioli, but if I could I’d be waving my numeric paddle and using all sorts of effusive words to encourage you to borrow or buy all three of Kwan’s books.

It can be read as a standalone but I think the story line would be more enjoyable starting from the first book. The sheer number of characters in Kwan’s third book might overwhelm a first-time reader if you’re one of those readers who need to remember everything about a character to enjoy the book. She’s like the “Little Engine that Could”. Everything she desires is at her disposal – except acceptance into that circle. She’s traded up three times and is married to her third husband, the second richest man in China, but she still strives for that elusive inner circle of the ultra rich and will stop at nothing – really, nothing – to be the richest and most popular in order to gain entry into that exclusive group. She does Lucy Ricardo better than Lucy Ricardo (OK, maybe that is an exaggeration). She does Erica Kane better than Erica Kane. Kwan is a writing master – he allows readers to form their own opinions about his characters through his vivid “show don’t tell” writing. The sweetheart has a mentally unstable ex-wife who actually adds some sobering reality to the otherwise ludicrous drama. It turns out grandma Su Yi has both a heart and a sarcastic sense of humor.Ī drama within a drama unfolds as Astrid battles her soon-to-be ex-husband amid a premature extravagant proposal on an elephant in India by her childhood sweetheart, which goes viral, of course. This includes keeping Nick, possible heir to one of the greatest Asian fortunes, and his ultra rich, yet likable fashionista cousin Astrid, another Su Yi favorite, away from Tyersall Park in hopes dear grandmamma will forget about them in her will.

1 grandson and various other family members flip and flop in the hopes of maneuvering a monetary jackpot their own way. Nick’s grandmother, Su Yi, who holds the family fortune, is on her death bed in her Singapore estate Tyersall Park, cousin Eddie grovels amid theatrics and drama to become the No. This third book brings some surprises – how hard the high and mighty crash to the ground. Both are estranged from his beloved grandmother, who felt that Rachel and her “nobody” family weren’t good enough for Nick. They pop, they sizzle and they’re magnificently alive as they travel in luxury on private jets between China, Singapore, Malaysia and the U.S.īy the time we reach the third installment, Nick and Rachel, featured first in “Crazy Rich Asians” are happily married after wading through Nick’s snobbish family to get there. All are written with either humility or hilarity and Kwan does such a wonderful job bringing their personalities to life that the reader feels a connection whether it’s hate, love or something in between. For the most part, it’s over-the-top luxury, snobbery and vulgarity but to balance it out, there are characters who hug closer to the ground when it comes to reality.
